Family Health Fair
Whether you participate in, promote, or organize a family health fair (Adobe Acrobat), they are a great way to inform and excite your community about all aspects of good health and feeling great, including activity and healthy eating. Invite experts to share what they know, have a few give-aways, schedule beautiful Kansas weather, and you're in business!
- Recruit personnel from local health institutions.
- Hospitals are just crawling with people who want YOU to be healthier! Hospitals often have someone dedicated to community outreach activities, so start with him or her for contact information and to discuss sponsorship. You should also talk to dietitians, nurses, physicians, and physical therapists to find out who can participate or provide materials.
- Health departments embrace the mission of community wellness, so a family health fair should be right up their alley! Locate the person in charge of outreach and find out what they can offer you or how you can partner with them in their current efforts.
- Locate a Kansas Health Department in your community (Adobe Acrobat)
- Directory provided by the Kansas Depatment of Health and Environment
- Recruit restaurants.
- Set up a healthy taste-test event. Challenge your local eating establishments to come up with delicious, attractive, and healthy appetizers, entrees, and desserts (yes, healthy desserts ARE possible!). These businesses will benefit from the chance to test new recipes and perhaps gain new customers. And your community will benefit from the chance to try creative and healthy new foods.
- Local farmer's market.
- The fresh produce at your farmer's market is a natural draw for people who like to eat fruits and vegetables. Take advantage of this "captive audience" by setting up a booth or display to promote the health benefits of the foods the customers want to eat anyway! Maybe you can even encourage them to try something they haven't tasted before. The produce vendors will probably be happy to discuss the possibilities with you.
- Find a farmers market near you!
